Project notes

[edit]

I just created this wikiproject, after several months of contemplating doing so. I hope everyone working on hurricane articles will get involved. I went ahead and wrote a bunch of guidelines, basically based on current practices...naturally since this is something I just wrote it doesn't necessarily represent community consensus and needs to be discussed. That discussion should probably go here for now...although eventually we may make these pages a little more structured. For a general TODO list, see the "tasks" item on the project page. The instructions for the review process are here. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:25, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Italicizing storm names

[edit]

It seems like we don't comply with MOS:ITALIC when we italicize many storm names like the recently-retired Milton and Helene. There's a carve out for foreign language names, which might make sense outside the NHC basins, but I don't see a real justification here as they are essentially loanwords in this case. The words as words use case does not apply as these are proper names. We should stop doing this and remove all existing cases of it. If no one objects I will continue removing italicizing of storm names. Please note WP:CONLEVEL which means that the global MOS overrides anything we might decide to the contrary here. I believe it would fall under words as words. ✶Quxyz 17:18, 3 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a requested move discussion at Talk:October 2017 Vietnam tropical depression#Requested move 26 March 2025 that may be of interest to members of this WikiProject. TarnishedPathtalk 12:57, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
