Well the Masks could also be reference to the deleted orgy scene in Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" but I'm probably reading too deeply into that. There are such things Masquerade Orgies to keep things secret & fun, It could just meant to foreshadow the fact that this is a dream. Her mind isn't thinking of anyone important so masks are being used as a creative interpretation of that. The people she knows would care about her a lot & wouldn't treat her that way but masked strangers....well...
